Amazon exec says the most important lessons from Jeff Bezos were the 16 leadership principles he once dismissed as cultlike

When Doug Herrington first arrived at Amazon more than two decades ago, he found not just a fast-moving e-commerce startup, but a culture wrapped in what felt like a corporate creed. “I felt like I had joined a cult,” Herrington said on a recent episode of Learn and Be Curious With Doug Herrington , Amazon’s new podcast . He had joined Amazon in 2005 as vice president of consumables, according to his LinkedIn , working up the ranks to CEO of worldwide Amazon stores by 2022. “I told my wife, ‘I don’t understand what’s going on,” he recalled. Herrington isn’t the only Amazon employee to describe…

Walmart exec says it’s ‘unfortunate’ that other companies are slashing workforces in the name of AI—they’re offering training to 1.6 million workers instead

There’s little doubt that artificial intelligence will transform the workforce —but the jury is still out on what that transformation will look like in the near term. While some companies have used AI as justification for sweeping job cuts , Walmart is betting on its existing workforce. The retail giant has just announced that its 1.6 million workforce will be provided free AI training.  Both frontline and corporate staff in the U.S. and Canada will have access to an eight-hour course on the fundamentals of AI, as part of its partnership with Google’s new AI Professional Certification . Just 5% of workers have this skill, according to Google—and they’re 4.5x times more likely to have a higher salary

Artificial intelligence may dominate the conversation in boardrooms and break rooms alike—but a new Google report suggests most workers still haven’t adopted the technology en masse. In a study conducted with Ipsos and shared exclusively with Fortune , Google found that just two in five U.S. workers (40%) are even casually using AI on the job. Only 5% are considered “AI fluent,” meaning they’ve redesigned or reorganized significant portions of their work with the technology. That gap appears to have real career implications. Workers who are AI fluent are 4.5x more likely to report higher wages…

Fed governor lays out 3 AI scenarios, including one with a giant population of ‘unemployable’ workers

The end may not be near after all. While fears of total automation often dominate public discourse, Federal Reserve Governor Michael S. Barr suggests that the rise of artificial intelligence could actually help job seekers and boost the economy. In a speech to the New York Association for Business Economics on Feb. 17, Barr offered three different scenarios for how AI might reshape the labor market. Describing generative AI as an all-purpose technology, Barr claimed we can see three stylized economic futures. One features a “jobless boom” for the economy that would be disastrous for workers, w…

It’s no time to go quiet on sustainability. Just ask beauty giant L’Oréal

Few would choose the humble showerhead when asked to name a product vital to the world’s sustainable future. Unless you are a hair salon engaged in the business of washing customers’ hair, of course. Then using 70% less water could well matter as you attempt to cut your carbon footprint. It is more efficient as well.  The Water Saver showerhead came from a partnership between Swiss startup, Gjosa, and L’Oréal, the global beauty brand and Fortune 500 Europe listee. At its most basic, Water Saver makes water, well, wetter—fragmenting the wat…

Fed confirms it obeyed White House request for an unusual ‘rate check,’ weakening the dollar against foreign currencies

The U.S. Federal Reserve confirmed yesterday that its trading desk did conduct a rare “rate check” on the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the Japanese yen on behalf of the White House earlier this year. The move is often regarded as a precursor to actively intervening in currency markets. In this case, the implication would be that the U.S. Treasury wanted to strengthen the yen versus the dollar (or vice versa, weaken the dollar versus the yen). Indeed, that is exactly what happened on the foreign exchange markets on Jan. 23 of this year. The dollar had been trading at ¥158.50 but th…

CEO hopefuls have a new rival for the top job: their own board directors

Appointing board directors as CEOs was once a “break glass in case of emergency” strategy reserved for scandal, illness, or sudden resignation. While it remains a minority path compared with traditional internal promotions, it is no longer an anomaly. New data from Spencer Stuart highlights the shift. Of the 168 new S&P 1500 chief executives appointed in 2025, the highest annual total since 2010, 19 were drawn from their own company boards, the most since 2020. Spencer Stuart classifies directors as outsiders because they lack day-to-day operating responsibility. Even so, more boards are t…
