Thad Matta secures 500th victory during coaching career at Butler, Ohio State, Xavier

Butler 's Thad Matta earned his 500th coaching victory, joining 79 coaches before him to hit that milestone, with a 93-89 win over Georgetown on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Finley Bizjack led the Bulldogs with 19 points, while Michael Ajayi and Jamie Kaiser Jr. had 16 each.

The Butler player who graduated in 1990 started his head coaching career with the Bulldogs in 2000, going 24-8 and earning an NCAA tournament berth out of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (now Horizon League). He moved on to Xavier — then in the Atlantic 10 — making three NCAA tournaments while compiling a 78-23 record.

Ohio State hired him in 2004, and the Buckeyes made the Final Four in his third season behind Lawrence North High School alumni Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr. Ohio State also went to the Final Four in 2012, but he left after the 2016-17 season as back issues coincided with a downturn in team performance. Matta returned to Butler for the 2022-23 season and has been right around .500 in his fourth season.
