According to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Passan , Meyer was voted in unanimously by the 72 players on the executive board as the replacement for Tony Clark, who had been in charge since 2013 and was the first former player to take that role.

Although no set date is known at this time, it’s important to point out that Meyer takes over on an interim basis in a sort of emergency. Clark recently stepped down after over a decade in the role, following an internal inquiry that came about from allegations of nepotism and other infringements.

While there is no ideal time for a change under these circumstances, it’s a particularly inadequate one with—to put it lightly—difficult negotiations on the horizon, as the current collective bargaining agreement expires in December 2026. The MLBPA has officially announced the change.

Matt Nussbaum, who had been general counsel for the MLBPA since 2022 and involved with the union for 15 years, was named to take Meyer’s old spot as interim deputy director.

A graduate of Boston University School of Law, Meyer has worked with the MLB Players Association since September 2018. Meyer spent nearly his first four years as a senior director of collective bargaining and legal before taking his role as deputy executive director in July of 2022.

Meyer is most known for being in charge of labor negotiations since coming aboard and was highly in the most recent CBA negotiations, which saw the owners lock the players out from December 2021 through March 2022 and delay the 2022 season by a week. In wake of Tony Clark’s surprise resignation, his No. 2 has taken over the players’ union — for at least the short term.
