Fort, Draft headed for Region 2B boys and girls basketball tourneys

Stuarts Draft and Fort Defiance are both set for postseason play in boys and girls basketball as the Region 2B playoff brackets were released. In the girls tournament, Stuarts Draft earned a first-round bye in the six-team bracket and won't play until Feb. 26. The second-seeded Cougars, who won the Shenandoah District this year with a perfect 16-0 mark and are 21-2 on the season, will play the winner of No.

6 Fort Defiance and No. 3 Strasburg who play at Strasburg Feb. 24 at 6:30 p.m. The other side of the girls bracket has No. 5 Buckingham County at No. 4 Central Woodstock on Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. The winner of that game travels to No. 1 Clarke County for a Feb. 26 game. Fort Defiance enters the tournament with a 10-12 record but winners of its last four games.

Fort and Strasburg have not met this year, but Stuarts Draft played both teams, losing by two at Strasburg in December and beating Fort twice, once by 60 and once by 39. In the boys tournament, Augusta County fans get a first-round matchup between No. 6 Stuarts Draft and No. 3 Fort Defiance Feb. 24 at 6:30 p..m. at Fort.

Fort Defiance (14-8) comes into the tournament red hot with five straight wins including big victories over Alleghany and Staunton. Fort beat Stuarts Draft (13-10) by four in December and by 13 on Feb. 12, a win that started the recent winning streak. The winner of that game will play at No. 2 Central Woodstock Feb. 27. The other side of the bracket has No. 5 Buckingham County at No. 4 Page County Feb. 24.

The winner plays at No. 1 Strasburg Feb. 27. Both the boys and girls championships will be held at Shenandoah University in Winchester Feb. 28.
