Clemson ’s struggles continued on Wednesday night in Winston-Salem, as the Tigers dropped their third straight game with an 85-77 loss to Wake Forest. After going more than a year without an ACC road loss prior to last weekend’s trip to Duke, Brad Brownell’s team has now fallen in consecutive road games and is searching for consistency at a critical point in the season.
The setback moved Clemson to 20-7 overall and 10-4 in ACC play, sliding the Tigers into fourth place in the conference standings. With games against North Carolina and Louisville approaching, the margin for error is shrinking. Both teams sit just behind Clemson in the league race and could jump ahead if the Tigers are unable to steady themselves down the stretch.
Even with the three-game skid, Clemson remains in respectable shape from a résumé perspective. The Tigers currently sit at No. 33 in the NET Rankings, down two spots following the loss. Wednesday’s defeat is classified as a Quad 1 loss, as Wake Forest moved to No. 58 in the NET after the win.
Clemson’s résumé now includes a 4-5 record in Quad 1 games, 6-2 in Quad 2, and a perfect 5-0 mark in both Quad 3 and Quad 4 opportunities. Clemson will look to stop the slide on Saturday when Florida State visits Littlejohn Coliseum for a noon tip. The Seminoles enter at 13-13 overall and 6-7 in conference play, and they have won five of their last six games.
With postseason positioning and ACC standings at stake, the Tigers will need a strong response at home to regain momentum heading toward March.
