PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia 76ers were busy during the All-Star break with the additions of Cam Payne, on a deal for the rest of the season, and Tyrese Martin, on a two-way deal. Martin has spent the last two seasons with the Brooklyn Nets where he averaged 8.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists while shooting 34.6% from deep.
The Sixers now have more guard depth that coach Nick Nurse can turn to should things get dicey at all the rest of the season. A team can never have too much depth in the grand scheme of things. Martin was waived by the Nets after the Feb. 5 deadline which set up an opportunity for the Sixers to sign him. "I heard about it probably a week ago or so," Martin said on Thursday morning.
"After that, All-Star break hit, so couldn’t really get nothing done, so just went on break, still worked out and things like that. Then, when the break was over and Jabari (Walker) got the regular, it made things happen. I’m excited to be here." Martin will be making the transition to the Sixers mid-season after playing 37 games for the Nets and will be looking to make that change fairly quickly.
He has a plan of attack for the final 28 games of the season whether he's in Philadelphia or playing in the G League. "Just being yourself," he said. "Every day talk with the players and try to build relationships as quickly as possible with the coaches and players and then just doing my part. Trying to get know everybody’s names and things like that.
Then, on the basketball court, it’s gonna take care of itself. After I figure out schemes, plays, principles on both sides of the basketball, things like that, but I think I’ll pick things up pretty fast." Of course, it does help that Martin can see a familiar face in former Nets forward Trendon Watford. The two were teammates in Brooklyn in the 2024-25 season.
"Definitely helps with him being here," Martin finished. "He texted me a week ago or so about it and things like that.
So, him being here definitely gonna make this process a little easy transition."
