Brooklyn Nets rookie forward Drake Powell has had some flashes of what his ceiling could be during his rookie season in the NBA, especially when he has seen more playing time. Powell has been trying to learn as much as he can while sharing the floor with veterans and four other rookies, but he had the chance to be celebrated during the All-Star Break.
Powell had his jersey at Northwood High School retired last week and Asheebo Rojas of Chatham News and Record posted videos and pictures of the event on X. According to Maxpreps , Powell scored 1,744 points during his time at Northwood High which culminated in him averaging 17.7 points, 7.9 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per game during his senior season.
Powell also reflected on what it was like to have such a honor of having his jersey retired. "It's great. I didn't know there was going to be that many people here, but yeah, I think that just speaks volumes to how much love that there is," Powell said of the event, according to Travon Miles of ABC 11.
Powell's father, Dedric, was also able to express his feelings about his son's big night when he said "it's definitely surreal, I will say that.
I mean, it's just like, you know, he was just here the other day, and now we're back doing this, you know, he's getting honored and, it's just great." Powell, 20 , is having a decent rookie season for the Nets this season as he's averaging 6.2 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 43.1% from the field and 29.9% from three-point land in 42 appearances.
Powell hasn't necessarily taken off like fellow rookies Egor Demin and Nolan Traore have, but he is learning more of the game each minute he's on the floor. With the Nets having 29 games left to play in the campaign, Powell will still have plenty of time to show what he can do on the floor, especially as head coach Jordi Fernandez is trying to develop all of the rookies as much as possible.
Whether Powell plays more down the stretch is left to be seen, but no matter what happens over the course of this season, he can say that his jersey is hanging in the rafters of a gym he used to play in.
