Olympics reporter apologizes for drinking, slurring words during live segment

Danika Mason, a sports reporter with Australia’s Channel Nine who is reporting on location this week from the Winter Olympics, appeared to deliver a segment while intoxicated in the early hours Thursday morning. Morning in Australia corresponds with nighttime in Milan. After apologizing to viewers, Mason confirmed that she drank before delivering an at times incoherent, slurred monologue on camera.

I’m just a little bit embarrassed. I totally misjudged a situation. I shouldn’t have had a drink, and especially in these conditions.

“It’s cold, we’ve got altitude, and not having had dinner probably didn’t help as well. But I want to take full responsibility. It’s not the standard that I set for myself. So in saying that, I’m genuinely really sorry… thank you for those messages that I have received as well.” One of those messages reportedly came from Anthony Albanese, the Prime Minister of Australia. “I’m pro Danika.
